DECEMBER 2018 UPDATE

the tower lit up

Our bells rang out before the 6pm Carol Service with the D’Capo choir on Sunday 9th December.

With the tower lit up, it was possible to both see and hear the bells as the congregation arrived. The school hand chimes, purchased with our Lottery grant, could also be heard as part of the service. They were played by members of the choir.  Many stayed for mulled wine and nibbles afterwards.

Our new bell ringers will be helping to ring bells at many of our local churches on the run up to Christmas and New Year, with our Barnham Broom bells ringing on the 17th before the School Carol Service and again on Christmas Day.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018 UPDATE

Three major milestones have occurred over the last couple of months.

On 14th October, The Right Reverend Graham James Bishop of Norwich led the re-dedication of our bells. Live feeds from the bell chamber and ringing chamber were transmitted to screens in the church and adjoining marquee allowing the congregation of villagers, donors and supporters to see.the re-dedication and the ringing of the bells. Afterwards, Bishop Graham presented many of our new bell ringers with certificates and then joined in the ringing himself.

The re-enactment of the history of our bells took place on 3rd November. This was a free event made possible by our Heritage Lottery Fund grant. Our audience was welcomed by the sound of our bells ringing and they rang again afterwards as light refreshments were served.

Our bells rang out three times on Remembrance Sunday. Once, muffled, in the morning service. The second time before the service at the Memorial Garden. The third time at 7.05pm, joining the rest of the Nation in marking the 100 years since the Armistice which ended of the First World War. After the ringing for peace, there was an opportunity for some to try their hands at ringing.  Our new bell ringers joined others to ring in several local churches on the day, but all had the opportunity to ring in Barnham Broom at least once.

Many of our bell ringers had a change of scenery on 24th of November, ringing as part of the Mattishall Christmas Fayre.

Our bells will ring again before the 6pm Carol Service with the D’Capo choir on Sunday 9th December. Before that there is an opportunity to join in with Christmas Bingo at Barnham Broom Village Hall NR9 4BU on Saturday 8th December to raise funds for new fencing around the children’s play area.  Doors open at 7pm for eyes down at 7.30pm.

There are still a few tasks left from our restoration project, including the CCTV to see the bells and ringing chamber from the church and the completion of the film about our restoration. Both are part of the plan put together to bid for our Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the completion of which is yet to come.

Remembrance Sunday 2018

Our bells rang out half muffled from 10.20am ahead of the 10.55am Remembrance Service at the church. The muffles came off in time for Tower Captain Jill Tinsey to mark the 2 minute silence at 11 o’clock and to toll the tenor as each name was read.  The bells rang out again after the service.

Our bells rang again from 2.30pm ahead of the 3pm Remembrance Service at the Memorial Garden. They could be heard at the Village Hall before the service began. There was time for our ringers to reach the Village Hall for the last part of the service and to enjoy the refreshments afterwards.

The last ringing of our bells was from 7.05pm, joining the nation in Ringing out for Peace. Many came to the church to witness the bells ringing and some tried their hand at ringing afterwards.

Throughout the day our new Bell Ringers joined with others to ring at Garvestone, Yaxham, Reymerston and Mattishall as well as having the opportunity to ring in Barnham Broom at least once.

The History of the Bells

Our thanks to all who came and supported our History of the Bells re-enactment at Barnham Broom Church. Thanks to everyone who organised and participated in the event and to the Maddermarket Theatre for the loan of the costumes.

This was a free event made possible by our Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Going from Roman times to the First World War and beyond, it told the story of when our five bells were hung. Our audience was welcomed by the sound of our bells ringing and they rang again afterwards as light refreshments were served.

A welcome from our bell ringers

Our narrator sets the scene, starting with the Romans

Onto the Middle Ages, Sir Robert Mortimer and the first two bells

Georgian times and tenant farmer and churchwarden Samuel Hipkin and his wife Jane. The arrival of the tenor bell. Then Victorian England where the three bells needed an overhaul and Rector John Bartlett saw a further two were hung.

John Bartlett was still Rector during the First World War. The local boys who gave their lives in the Great War.

A final bow from the cast.

Then ringing and refreshments afterwards.

SEPTEMBER 2018 UPDATE

While we continue to gather in the promised grants, planning is well underway for the rededication service in October. A site visit to the church has helped finalise details, including the placement of the marquees.

As we are working towards the rededication and re-enactment, there is separate work going on in the church.

Thanks go to the volunteers who have helped remove the old heating pipes and clean down the ceiling under the organ loft ready to be repainted in time for the rededication.
Work has also been undertaken to smarten the drive.

At the end of the month our trainee bell ringers joined in a ringing competition at South Walsham with four other teams of learners.
