VJ Day 75 - Ringing of the Barnham Broom Church Bells

On Saturday 15 August 2020 a group, including Bell Ringers and Bell Restoration Committee members, gathered in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Barnham Broom to mark the 75th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan) commemorating the end of the Second World War.

A two minutes silence was observed at 11am, followed by the reading, "Cry for Peace", read by the Tower Captain, Jill Tinsey, after which the restored Tenor bell chimed 75 times, rung by Ben Curtis. Ben was the last person to ring our bells before they were lowered and taken away for restoration. He also rang our bells using the restored Ellacombe chimes on the evening of 8 May 2020 to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

With thanks to Ben and his family for the video of the full 75 chimes

Ringing for VE75

Listen out for the bells of Barnham Broom at 7pm tonight.

With the slight change to the church restrictions we have been given permission to do this.

As well as restoring our bells, we restored the Ellacombe Chimes.
This is a way for one person to ring all our bells via a set of ropes and hammers.

Ben Curtis was the last person to ring our bells before they were lowered and taken away for restoration.
He will be ringing the bells this evening using the Ellacombe chimes to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

JUNE TO DECEMBER 2019 UPDATE

With the safety of our bell ringers and visitors to our bells in mind, we’ve used our surplus funds on repairs to the bell tower stairs and West Window. The window repairs were done in time for the bells to ring for our Carol Service on Sunday 8th December and then again for the School Carol Service. Monday night ringing practices are now back in Barnham Broom.

Our bells will be ringing on Christmas Morning ahead of the service.

As well as human visitors to the bell chamber, we have had a blue tit which seemed to like taking selfies on one of the cameras and a long eared brown bat which has taken up residence and is now in hibernation.

On the 3rd January, the film of The Bells of Barnham Broom will be shown at Barnham Broom Village Hall NR9 4BU. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.  The film will be presented by Producer Richard Kennan. Entrance is free and refreshments will be available after the show.

Our Barnham Broom Community Fund events committee are continuing to bring the village together in social events that help raise funds for the local community.  Since June there has been a chance to meet the Community Fund events committee, an Afternoon Tea and Open Gardens, a Village Fun Day, a Yard Sale, a Quiz Night and Prize Bingo. Most recently the Christmas Capers event included a special visit from Father Christmas and entertainment by The D'Capo choir and the Windmill Handbell Ringers. The next event will be a Quiz Night in March 2020.

Our thanks to the bell ringers for ringing the bells at services throughout the year and to all who continue to support us.

JANUARY TO MAY 2019 UPDATE

Ringing on Easter Sunday

Our bells are now ringing regularly: ahead of services, by visiting ringers and to help train our ringers on Monday evenings. There was a full peal of bells rung on 6th March which took 2 hours 38 minutes for the 5,040 changes.
See https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1274541 for details. The only other full peal was rung in 1970.

As well as ringing out to welcome everyone to the Licensing of Rev Dr Louisa Pittman as Assistant Curate on 27th March, they rang again in a quarter peal after the service.

Our ringers are also joining others to ring ahead of se
The ringers outing route
rvices at other local churches, such as Garvestone and Reymerston. Some joined other local ringers for a ringers outing to visit and ring at 7 churches in Suffolk on Saturday, 11th May.

Having received the final refunds from the taxman on top of the final payment of our Heritage Lottery Fund grant, our committee met again in April to agree how the funds in hand could extend our restoration project. With the safety of our bell ringers and visitors to our bells in mind, repairs to the bell tower stairs and window sill are our priority. With the Wi-Fi issue resolved, the cameras installed in the bell tower are now in action.

As the Barnham Broom Community Fund, our events committee are continuing to bring the village together in social events that help raise funds for the local community.  Following on from a recent quiz, there will be:

Saturday 15th June 2pm to 4pm at the Village Hall. A chance to meet up over a cuppa and cake and talk about what sort of events you would like to see in the future and volunteer your help.

Saturday 29th June 3pm to 5pm.  Afternoon Tea at Home Farm with Tea, cakes and a raffle. Entry on the door. £5 per person £2.50 children under 12.

Sunday 11 August 12noon to 5pm at the Village Hall and Playing Fields. A Village Fun Day with lots of fun for all the family. Children's entertainer Stevie Spud, games and races for everyone, BBQ by Barnham Broom Golf & Country Club, Beer Tent by The Bell Public House, tea and cakes, ice cream and lots more. Free Entry.

Please come and support our events. A chance to meet up, have fun and support our community.

DECEMBER 2018 UPDATE

the tower lit up

Our bells rang out before the 6pm Carol Service with the D’Capo choir on Sunday 9th December.

With the tower lit up, it was possible to both see and hear the bells as the congregation arrived. The school hand chimes, purchased with our Lottery grant, could also be heard as part of the service. They were played by members of the choir.  Many stayed for mulled wine and nibbles afterwards.

Our new bell ringers will be helping to ring bells at many of our local churches on the run up to Christmas and New Year, with our Barnham Broom bells ringing on the 17th before the School Carol Service and again on Christmas Day.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018 UPDATE

Three major milestones have occurred over the last couple of months.

On 14th October, The Right Reverend Graham James Bishop of Norwich led the re-dedication of our bells. Live feeds from the bell chamber and ringing chamber were transmitted to screens in the church and adjoining marquee allowing the congregation of villagers, donors and supporters to see.the re-dedication and the ringing of the bells. Afterwards, Bishop Graham presented many of our new bell ringers with certificates and then joined in the ringing himself.

The re-enactment of the history of our bells took place on 3rd November. This was a free event made possible by our Heritage Lottery Fund grant. Our audience was welcomed by the sound of our bells ringing and they rang again afterwards as light refreshments were served.

Our bells rang out three times on Remembrance Sunday. Once, muffled, in the morning service. The second time before the service at the Memorial Garden. The third time at 7.05pm, joining the rest of the Nation in marking the 100 years since the Armistice which ended of the First World War. After the ringing for peace, there was an opportunity for some to try their hands at ringing.  Our new bell ringers joined others to ring in several local churches on the day, but all had the opportunity to ring in Barnham Broom at least once.

Many of our bell ringers had a change of scenery on 24th of November, ringing as part of the Mattishall Christmas Fayre.

Our bells will ring again before the 6pm Carol Service with the D’Capo choir on Sunday 9th December. Before that there is an opportunity to join in with Christmas Bingo at Barnham Broom Village Hall NR9 4BU on Saturday 8th December to raise funds for new fencing around the children’s play area.  Doors open at 7pm for eyes down at 7.30pm.

There are still a few tasks left from our restoration project, including the CCTV to see the bells and ringing chamber from the church and the completion of the film about our restoration. Both are part of the plan put together to bid for our Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the completion of which is yet to come.

Remembrance Sunday 2018

Our bells rang out half muffled from 10.20am ahead of the 10.55am Remembrance Service at the church. The muffles came off in time for Tower Captain Jill Tinsey to mark the 2 minute silence at 11 o’clock and to toll the tenor as each name was read.  The bells rang out again after the service.

Our bells rang again from 2.30pm ahead of the 3pm Remembrance Service at the Memorial Garden. They could be heard at the Village Hall before the service began. There was time for our ringers to reach the Village Hall for the last part of the service and to enjoy the refreshments afterwards.

The last ringing of our bells was from 7.05pm, joining the nation in Ringing out for Peace. Many came to the church to witness the bells ringing and some tried their hand at ringing afterwards.

Throughout the day our new Bell Ringers joined with others to ring at Garvestone, Yaxham, Reymerston and Mattishall as well as having the opportunity to ring in Barnham Broom at least once.
