NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 UPDATE

The target date for our Lottery bid is the first of December and we are including summaries of the various aspects of our “Heritage Package” in this. One strand of this will be the development of a programme of re-enactments of the history of the area.

We have been looking at the work needed to install lighting in the belfry and have the approval to go ahead with this.

A huge thank you to everyone for their support during 2016 with donations, contributions to our collection boxes and help and support at our events. Our fund plus pledges has now reached over £26,900 with our collection boxes and events raising over £4,800 so far this year. We’ve had a Quiz Night, Mardling evening, Village Fete and Beetle Drive and our Christmas Bingo evening on Saturday 3rd December is still to come. Please do come and join us.

Watch out for several fund-raising events being planned for 2017.

OCTOBER 2016 UPDATE

We are working on a “Heritage Package” to strengthen the link between our Bells, Church and Community as part of our lottery application. Ideas include a new “Barnham Broom Trail”, work on the history and archaeology of the area and various forms of entertainment including possible re-enactments. We’re still looking for local historians to help. Please contact bbbells.appeal@gmail.com if you would like to get involved.

Following the recent structural survey, we were able to toll one of the bells at the funeral of Ken Cranefield, a WW2 pilot officer who was awarded a DFC for bravery and valour while attempting to drop supplies to UK forces in Arnhem in 1944.

Our thanks once again to everyone for your continued support. Our fund plus pledges has now reached almost £26,800. Despite being up against the Great British Bake Off final, our Beetle Drive still managed to raise a small profit.

Do please come and join us at our next fund raising event. We have a Christmas Bingo Evening on Saturday 3rd December at Barnham Broom Village Hall. No need to book in advance, just turn up on the night.

SEPTEMBER 2016 UPDATE

As part of our lottery application, we are looking at ways to strengthen the link between our Bells, Church and Community involvement. One of our ideas is to develop a new “Barnham Broom Trail”, where the history of the village will complement a walking map of the area.
Do we have any local historians who would like to help with this? Please contact bbbells.appeal@gmail.com if you would like to get involved.

Please come and support us at our fund raising events. We’re having a Beetle Drive on Wednesday 26th October. Tickets are £5 adults / £3 children (under 16) and are on sale now from Barnham Broom Post Office and Stores. Entrance includes Sausages and Baked Potato
We’ll also be having Christmas Bingo on Saturday 3rd December.
Both are at Barnham Broom Village Hall.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support, helping our fund plus pledges to reach over £24,700.

Our latest trainee bell ringers, who showed an interest in learning more about bell ringing after seeing the Charmborough Ring portable belfry at the fete, have started lessons at Reymerston Church with Ringing Master Keith Tinsey and his wife Jill.

AUGUST 2016 UPDATE

Two members of the Bells Appeal Committee recently visited the Lottery grant headquarters in Cambridge to discuss a possible Heritage Scheme grant for our bells. We were very encouraged by their response and so are going forward with an application. To help our application, we need to show the link between our Bells, Church and Community involvement, not just for fund raising. Do you have any ideas of how we could make more use of our Bells and Church in the community? Contact bbbells.appeal@gmail.com with things you would like to see.

Several people, both adults and children, showed an interest in learning more about bell ringing after seeing the Charmborough Ring portable belfry at the fete. Those who put their names forward are being invited in September to see for themselves what is involved and to try their hand at ringing a full size bell.  All potential ringers are welcome and if there are any more people who would like to join the growing list, please contact bbbells.appeal@gmail.com.

Our sincere thanks to Church Care for awarding us a grant of £2200 towards our bells and to everyone for their individual contributions helping our fund plus pledges to reach over £23,400.

There will be a Norfolk Churches Trust cycle ride on 10th of September. Details and forms in the church or from the website (www.norfolkchurchestrust.org.uk/bike-ride).

We will also have a Beetle Drive and Christmas Bingo later this year.

JULY 2016 UPDATE

Thank you to all who supported and helped at our very successful Village Fete, allowing us to raise over £3,300 towards the Bells Appeal. We were encouraged by the kind comments both on the day and since of how much people enjoyed a traditional Village Fete.  The Charmborough Ring was also a big success, with a full peal of bells ringing thanks to local bell ringers, many people trying their hand at ringing the bells and several showing an interest in following this up.

Planning will start soon on a Beetle Drive and Christmas Bingo for later this year.

Meanwhile we are working on our application to the National Lottery. A second application for the fabric of the church will be made at a later date. Both applications need to include how we can increase the use of the Bells and Church not just for fund raising but as part of village life. Do you have ideas on how we could do this? If so, please contact us at bbbells.appeal@gmail.com with your thoughts.

Thank you all for your continued support and donations. Following the Village Fete, our total fund plus pledges has now reached over £23,000.

Thanks to all who contributed with prizes, cakes, books, plants, bric-a-brac and the loan of various items of equipment.

Thanks also to the organisers, helpers, stall holders and participants, to those who helped set up the fete and take it down again, to the EDP for their Community Chest grant towards the hire and transport of the Charmborough Ring, to those who gave donations and to all at Mill House for their support in providing such a great venue for the fete and duck race.

We appreciate the feedback both on the day and since of how much people enjoyed a traditional village fete.  The glorious sunshine gave everyone a chance to socialize and enjoy the various attractions, helping us raise over £3,300 towards the Bells Appeal.

The Charmborough Ring - a portable belfry

Our successful application to the EDP Community Chest Scheme has helped us hire the Charmborough Ring for the Barnham Broom Village Fete on Sunday 17th July 2016.

The Charmborough Ring is a portable belfry with 6 bells hung for full circle ringing. It is operated by the Charmborough Bell Trust as a registered charity for promoting change–ringing in the wider community. Change-ringing originated in English churches in the 17th century and is still going strong today. Each bell rotates backwards and forwards, sounding once as it rotates in each direction. By changing the speed of rotation, the ringers cause the bells to sound in different orders according to a pre-arranged permutation or “method”.

See more information about the Charmborough Ring by visiting their website at www.charmborough.org

JUNE 2016 UPDATE

Organisation of the Barnham Broom Village fete on Sunday 17th July continues with posters, banners and, thanks to Warners Estate Agents, estate agent boards going up in Barnham Broom and the surrounding area.

Entrance to the fete is free but there will be a small fee of £1 for car parking on the day.

As well as the entertainment already advertised, we’ll be having big bells and little bells on display. Our successful application to the EDP Community Chest Scheme was for the hire of a Travelling Belfry for the fete, which has now been confirmed. There will also be Hand Bell Ringers.  We’re planning a Bouncy Castle (weather permitting), a soft play area and face painting. With all the recent rain, the ducks would have sailed down river pretty quickly if our duck race had been last weekend.

If you can help to set up or participate in the fete please talk to Karen at the Barnham Broom Post Office & Stores or contact us via bbbells.appeal@gmail.com

MAY 2016 UPDATE

Once again the bells have rung out from the Church of St Peter & St Paul, Barnham Broom. This time it was part of a structural survey of the Bell Tower. We had 4 ringers available for our 5 bells. A passing visitor who was drawn by the sound of the bells turned out to be an experienced bell ringer from Yeovil.  Joining in, that meant three out of our five ringers were Bell Captains.

A big thank you to everyone involved with the very enjoyable Mardling and Music evening with Keith Skipper and Ian Prettyman which raised just over £285 towards the Barnham Broom Church Bells Restoration Appeal. The fine weather meant that we could enjoy our refreshments afterwards al fresco.

Organisation of the Barnham Broom Village fete on Sunday 17th July is stepping up a pace. Posters will be going up around the village soon and more information will be available nearer the time. If you can help to set up or participate in the fete please talk to Karen at the Barnham Broom Post Office & Stores or contact us via bbbells.appeal@gmail.com

Our thanks once again for your continued support and donations. Our total fund plus pledges has now reached over £19,800.

Keith Skipper and Ian Prettyman in Barnham Broom

We are proud to present two of the area’s best-known performers as part of their fundraising tour of local churches.

Writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper is again teaming up with Methodist preacher Ian Prettyman for a Mardling and Music Evening in aid of our Church Bells Restoration Appeal at St Peter and St Paul Church Barnham Broom NR9 4DB on Saturday, May 21st.

Keith, based in Cromer, and Ian, from Lowestoft, have appeared together on many occasions as part of productions of All Preacher Great and Small in churches and as members of the much-loved Press Gang entertainment troupe in theatres and village halls over a period of 25 years.
“We make regular use of our inter-county rivalry on these outings but always find complete harmony when it comes to the target in mind – encouraging local communities to support a vital drive for extra finances “ says Keith. “We are delighted to include Barnham Broom on the last lap of our great adventure in so many wonderful local buildings.”
While Keith shares favourite church and chapel yarns and verses as well as a Bible reading in his beloved Norfolk dialect, his colleague provides musical items, including traditional East Anglian farming and fishing songs and a rousing medley on his melodeon.

Doors open 7pm for a 7.30pm start and the show runs without a break until about 9pm. Then it’s time for mardling, a raffle in aid of the Bells Appeal and refreshments.
Tickets are £10 per person and go on sale at our Quiz evening on Saturday, April 16th. Following this they can be purchased from Barnham Broom Post Office & Stores.
Refreshments are included in the ticket price and Parking is available.

"Middle age is when, if you have a choice between two temptations, you select the one that will get you home earlier."  Keith Skipper Nov 2015

We are just under 70 tokens short for an application on behalf of a second Barnham Broom project and one has been nominated by the Parish Council.
If you still have any March EDP tokens, please drop them into the collection box at Barnham Broom Post Office & Store or let us know where they can be collected from so that we can make the second application before the deadline of Friday, April 8.
